Barcelona delay Camp Nou return to mid-February
Barcelona have announced a further delay to their return to the Camp Nou, now scheduled for mid-February 2025, as the historic stadium continues its extensive modernisation and expansion. In a statement on 20th November, the club confirmed that their La Liga matches against Valencia on 26 January and Alaves on 2 February would be held at the Montjuic Olympic Stadium. Barcelona cited UEFA regulations, which prevent clubs from switching venues during the Champions League group stage, as well as the logistical and financial challenges of operating two stadiums simultaneously. If all goes to plan, Barcelona could return to the Camp Nou for their home fixture against Rayo Vallecano on 16 February. Barcelona had previously expressed hopes of returning to their iconic home ground by late 2024, with an initial capacity of 62,000. The full redevelopment, part of the ambitious "Espai Barca" project, is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026. Once finished, the revamped Camp Nou will feature a capacity of 105,000, along with a state-of-the-art roof and other enhancements. Construction work began in June 2023 but has faced several setbacks, including delays in obtaining permits and complaints about working conditions. As a precautionary measure, the club has requested an extension of their agreement to use the Montjuic Olympic Stadium until 31 March 2025. The temporary move to the Montjuic Olympic Stadium has posed logistical difficulties for the Catalan giants, with the smaller venue accommodating significantly fewer fans than the Camp Nou. Despite these challenges, Barcelona remain committed to completing the redevelopment, which aims to cement the club's future by improving match-day experiences and increasing revenue.
