Nissanka’s Blazing Century Powers Sri Lanka into Super Eights; Australia on the Brink

A magnificent unbeaten 100 from Pathum Nissanka propelled Sri Lanka to a commanding eight-wicket win over Australia in their T20 World Cup clash in Pallekele on Monday (February 16). Chasing 182, Nissanka set the tone from the outset with an audacious six in the opening over and never relented. Despite an early setback with Kusal Perera’s dismissal, he found solid support in Kusal Mendis as the hosts surged to 61/1 in the PowerPlay. The pair added 97 runs, both reaching half-centuries, as Australia’s spinners struggled for control. With 61 needed off the final six overs, Nissanka shifted gears, smashing Marcus Stoinis for a decisive 20-run over. He brought up his second T20I hundred in style with two stunning sixes and remained unbeaten as Sri Lanka romped home with two overs to spare. Earlier, Australia appeared set for a bigger total after a 104-run opening stand between Travis Head (56) and Mitchell Marsh (54). However, Sri Lanka’s spinners sparked a collapse, with Dushan Hemantha claiming 3-37 and timely strikes from Dushmantha Chameera and Maheesh Theekshana restricting Australia to 181. The victory marked Sri Lanka’s third straight win, sealing their place in the Super Eights, while Australia’s campaign now hangs in the balance following back-to-back defeats.
