Flip-Flop on Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2026 Withdrawal Sparks Confusion

Bangladesh government sports adviser Asif Nazrul made a surprising pivot on Tuesday, saying the decision for Bangladesh to skip the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 was taken by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the players, not the government. Earlier on January 22, Asif had publicly stated that the interim government had decided to withdraw, citing perceived injustice from the ICC and national dignity. After meeting the players, he described the meeting as an explanation of the government’s decision. However, on Tuesday he insisted there was “no question of regret” and claimed the choice was made jointly by the BCB and players to protect cricket and national interests. He also welcomed the ICC’s assurance that Bangladesh would face no sanctions and could be considered for future international events. Asif, who was understood to have been influential in the original withdrawal, offered praise for the BCB’s role and highlighted the ICC’s cooperative stance.
